In Final Fantasy 7, you have a various arsenal of vehicles for transportation. The vehicles are very useful, and almost essential to proceed in the game. Here is a list of the various vehiicles you can obtain:

Red Buggy
Tiny Bronco
Highwind
Submarine
Chocobo's

The Red Buggy is available after you are held prisoner in the Gold Saucer, and you win the Chocobo Races. It can cross shallow parts in rivers (indicated by light green), and is able to cross land, and access the desert surrounding the Gold Saucer. However, you still encounter random battles the same amount of times, as if you were walking, but more quickly, because we are travelling faster.

The Tiny Bronco becomes available after your first visit at Rocket Town. Tiny Bronco can only travel along the shallow parts of the ocean, (indicated by light blue). However, it cannot travel on land, and you can only get off of it at beaches located around the world. You also do not encounter random battles while on the Tiny Bronco.

Cid's Highwind is the most useful vehicle besides the Gold Chocobo. The Highwind can travel across anything because it flies through the air. However, it can't land in forests, deserts, snow, and any other type of terrain other than grassy fields. It may seem like a drawback, but almost every place has a grassy area somewhere, so you can just walk, or ride a chocobo for the extra distance. You do not encounter any random battles when your are in the Highwind.

The submarine can access only deep water (indicated by dark blue), and can go deep underwater to secret locations around the world. The submarine, only allows you to get off when you enter small inlets (like the one beside Junon). You don't encounter any battles in the submarine, unless your underwater and you run into the Emerald WEAPON.

Chocobo's are the other very useful means of transportation in the game. However, it depends on what type/color of chocobo you have. For a full descriptions on the different types of chocobo's, click here. All of the chocobo's can travel on land, and you do not experience any random battles while riding a chocobo.
