Description of Limit Breaks
For a quick overview of what "Limit Breaks" are, they are basically a characters special attack which becomes enabled when the character receives enough damage from enemies, and their "Limit Bar" is full. After it has filled up, the command "Attack" will be replaced by "Limit". After selecting Limit, the player can choose from one, or two of the characters' special attack. These attacks do more damage than normal attacks, and are very useful for getting out of tough situations.

Most characters have two limits per level, but not Cait Sith, and Vincent, who only learn one per level. Each character can use a total of two limits, considering both limits have been learned for a level. However, when you switch between limit levels in the game menu, the previous level limit breaks cannot be used.
For example: Cloud's Limit Breaks go as follows:

Limit Breaks
Limit Name Description
Braver Attacks an opponent
Cross Slash Attacks an opponent; may also paralyze the receiver of the attack

That would be his first set of what is called his "Level 1 Limit Breaks". After he learns both of them, he is ready to learn his first "Level 2 Limit Break" which would be "Blade Beam". So, when he learns Blade Beam, and you go into the menu, and look at his limit breaks, it is set at Level 1, which allows you to use his first Level 1 Limit Breaks. See the connection? Therefore, to use his new, more powerful attack, Blade Beam, you have to set the level to 2. However, doing that, will only allow you to use his Level 2 Limit Breaks. Therefore, you can now use Blade Beam, but, Braver and Cross Slash are disabled. Whew! Got that? If not, e-mail me! And, now let us continue!

Now, here is where it kinda lightens up. Now, I'll use the examples from above. You should know by now that Cloud's Level 1 Limit Breaks are Braver and Cross Slash, and that his Level 2 Limit Breaks are Blade Beam and Climhazzard which I failed to mention earlier.
So, now I'll describe how you might get Blade Beam, before Cross Slash. Okay, first of all, limit breaks are learned in a specific way. Because Braver is automatically equipped on you, as your first limit break for Cloud, it is your only limit. However, if you use Braver a total of 8 times (8x), you will therefore learn Cross Slash. However, to obtain Blade Beam, you must kill at least 120 enemies. If you kill 120 enemies BEFORE you use Braver 8x, you will learn Cloud's Level 2 Limit Break: Blade Beam before Cross Slash, because you killed 120 enemies before using Braver 8x. Get the picture? Hope so!

Now, since I've got that covered, click on the link below to go to the Limit Break Page, which contains all of the characters complete limit breaks, with full descriptions.
